The area was designated as a national park on 12 August 1997, having been originally declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1938. The reason for declaring the area as protected is to protect the catchment of Minneriya tank and the wildlife of the surrounding area. The tank is of historical importance, having been built by King Mahasen in the third century AD. The park is a dry season feeding ground for the elephant population dwelling in the forests of Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee districts.

Pidurangala Rock

Standing 199 metres tall, Pidurangala Rock has a long history which is widely believed to date back to the second century BC and is where a monastery was built by King Kashyapa. Ancient chronicles state that monks who previously resided at Sigiriya were donated the temple by the king before he took to building the marvellous structure atop Sigiriya Rock. The temple consisted of five buildings called ‘Panchavasa’, some of which can still be seen during your visit.

Sigiriya

Sigiriya Lion Rock is an ancient rock fortress known for its massive column of rock that reaches nearly 200 meters high. The site dates to the reign of King Kasyapa (477-495 AD), who chose this site as his new capital. He decorated the walls with frescoes and built an impressive palace right on top of the rock column, accessible only through the mouth of an enormous carved lion.

Ritigala

Ritigala is a mountain in central Sri Lanka which is home to an ancient Buddhist monastery. The ruins and rock inscriptions of the monastery date back to the 1st century BCE. It is located 43 km (27 mi) away from the ancient monastic city of Anuradhapura.Ritigala mountain consists of four peaks which rise steeply from the surrounding plain. The mountain is 6.5 km in length and divided into northern and southern blocks by Maha-Degala Gorge. The highest peak is Ritigala Kanda in the southern block.

Rawana Rock

Hiking Ella Rock is suitable for most people with a decent level of fitness. It starts off relatively easy and mostly flat, but it does begin to climb towards the end. Because of that, I would classify it as a moderate level hike, due to the hill towards the end of the humidity. If you are looking for an easier, shorter hike, then Little Adam’s Peak is another great hike to do whilst in Ella.

Little Adam’s Peack

The Little Adam`s Peak got it`s named after it`s big brother, the holy mountain Adam`s Peak, because of the similar shape. Adam`s Peak is further west in Sri Lanka, close to Nuwara Eliya, and is 2243 m high and a much more exhausting and more challenging climb! The mountain has however three names; Adam`s Peak (this is where Adam first set foot on earth after being cast out of heaven), Sri Pada (Buddha`s footprint left by the Buddha as he headed towards paradise) and Samanalakande (Butterfly Mountain, where butterflies go to die). We had plans of climbing Big Adam`s Peak, but Espen hurt his knee, so we settled for the “little brother” instead.

Adam’s Peack

The mountain is also known as Mount Malaya in Buddhist sources, particularly the Mahayana Lankavatara Sutra, which states that the Buddha preached this sutra on top of the mountain. According to this sutra, the mountain was the abode of Rāvanā, overlord of the Raskshasas and ruler of Laṅkā. Other names in Sanskrit sources include Mount Lanka, Ratnagiri (Mountain of Gems), Malayagiri (Mount Malaya) or Mount Rohana.

Wild Safari

Wake before the golden sun strikes the earth and float above the sweeping terrain in a hot air balloon. &BEYOND guests can marvel at the panoramic views of the Sri Lankan countryside below. The balloon takes off near Sigiriya and silently soars over parts of the Cultural Triangle where you can view the splendour of Lion Rock, the dense expanse of monsoon forests and ancient man-made reservoirs dotted with wildlife at the shoreline quenching their thirst.
